HealthyTOKYO develops and makes all of our own CBD and plant-based wellness products in Japan, in our own factory, for people who take this seriously.
Almost everything we know came from doing CBD in Japan before anyone else did. It is the most scrutinized, most tightly regulated corner of wellness in this country, and we have worked in it since 2016. That is where our standards come from, and it is why we can say what we say about everything else we make.
Where we came from
HealthyTOKYO was founded in Tokyo in 2011 by Michael Bobrove, an American who has lived and worked in Japan for more than forty years, in Japanese. Japan is not a market he entered. It is his home. He came to HealthyTOKYO from pharmaceuticals and medical devices, industries where nothing reaches a customer without being tested, documented and accounted for. He also founded MAJIC, Japan’s first industry association for companies that make and sell legal hemp products, and serves as its chairman.
We began by helping international visitors reach medical and healthcare services in Japan. That work taught us how much of wellness sits outside a clinic, and over the following years we moved into health and wellness products of our own.
In 2015 we started developing CBD. In 2016 we brought our first CBD products to the Japanese market, before most people here had heard of the word.
What followed was a run of firsts.

We became the first company anywhere in the world to sell CBD at an airport.

We opened Japan’s first dedicated CBD shop.

We built our own manufacturing facility in Tokyo rather than handing production to someone else.
We also built the CBD cafe in Japan. Not a shop with a coffee machine in the corner, but a place where CBD and plant-based food sat together and made sense together. Others have followed. We were first, and we took the idea further than anyone.
No other CBD company in Japan has done what we have in retail. Over the years we have run our own shops at an international airport, inside major department stores and shopping centers in Tokyo and Sapporo, and in a machiya on one of Kyoto’s oldest streets. These are the kind of locations that do not open their doors to a category until somebody has proven it belongs there. Getting into them took years of building trust with landlords and customers alike, and it is a large part of how CBD became something ordinary people in Japan could buy without hesitation.
Plant-based food was never a sideline for us. In 2018 we opened the first fully plant-based restaurant in any airport in Japan, at Haneda. Over the years that followed we developed a wide range of plant-based and gluten-free food in Japan, guided by one rule: food should be chosen because it is delicious, not because it is vegan. That work earned us a reputation in plant-based food that stands on its own, separately from CBD.
Where we are now
Our factory in Edogawa. We produce everything at our own facility in Edogawa, Tokyo, using organically grown hemp. Every batch is tested and the results are available for every product we sell.
We build and test this way because of where we came from. In pharmaceuticals and medical devices, you do not get to guess what is in something, and you do not get to describe a product by what you hope it does. We brought those habits with us. It is the only honest way to answer questions about our own products, and in a category where a great deal is claimed and very little is shown, it is the difference we would most want a customer to notice.
CBD edibles are what we know best. Oils, gummies and CBD sweets, all natural, all plant-based, all made by us. Very few companies in Japan formulate, manufacture and sell their own CBD edibles. We have been doing it longer than anyone here and it remains the part of the business where our expertise is deepest.
Our flagship in Harajuku. HealthyTOKYO CBD Shop & LABO sits on the first floor of Tokyu Plaza Harajuku “Harakado”, on the Jingumae crossing, one of the most recognizable corners in Japan. It is our flagship, and it holds everything we offer in one room: CBD oils, gummies and vapes, plant-based bath and body care, care for cats and dogs, and a gluten-free bakery counter.

Urban Wellness, Made in Japan.
It is not the name of the shop, though enough people have assumed it is that we have stopped correcting them. It is simply what we do.
Very little is behind glass. Testers are open, there are samples on the tasting bench most days, and most of our team works in Japanese and English. There is no appointment and no pressure to buy.

Where we are going
Harakado is where the whole company shows up in a single room, and reopening it as an urban wellness flagship is the clearest statement of where we are heading.
Urban wellness is the wider idea CBD led us to. Plant-based food. Bath and body care. Care for pets. Products built around Japanese ingredients, made in Japan, by people who can tell you exactly what is in them and why.
We are not moving away from CBD. We are still Japan’s CBD pioneer, we still make the CBD edibles we are known for, and that will not change. What is changing is the range of things we are willing to put our name on, and the standard stays the same for all of it: made in Japan, plant-based, tested, and explained properly.

2011
Founded in Tokyo, providing medical travel support and helping international visitors access healthcare in Japan.
2012 to 2014
Expanded from healthcare services into health and wellness products.
2015
Began developing CBD and preparing to introduce it to the Japanese market.
2016
Launched our first CBD products in Japan.
2017
Featured on NHK’s Asaichi for our matcha.
2018
Opened HealthyTOKYO CBD Shop & Cafe at Haneda Airport, becoming the first company in the world to sell CBD products at an airport. The location was also the first fully plant-based restaurant in any airport in Japan.
2019
Received the Asia Pacific regional award for Best Airport Health Centered Offer of the Year.
2020
Opened HealthyTOKYO CBD Shop & Cafe in Harajuku, Japan’s first dedicated CBD shop and our second location. Opened HealthyTOKYO CBD Factory & Cafe in Edogawa, Tokyo, establishing our own facility for product development and manufacturing. Opened HealthyTOKYO CBD Shop & Cafe in Daikanyama, our third shop in Tokyo.
2021
Our CBD gummies featured in The New York Times.
2022
Featured on TBS.
2023
Opened HealthyTOKYO CBD Shop & Cafe at Shinjuku Marui Honkan. Opened HealthyTOKYO CBD Shop & LABO at COCONO SUSUKINO in Sapporo, our first location outside Tokyo.
2024
Opened HealthyTOKYO CBD Shop & LABO at Tokyu Plaza Harajuku “Harakado”. Opened a collaboration shop with SHOLAYERED on Nenenomichi in Kyoto.
2025 to 2026
Consolidated our retail into a single flagship, bringing the range, the staff and the experience that had been spread across several locations together in Harajuku.
2026
Harakado reopens as our urban wellness flagship, bringing CBD, bath and body care, pet care and our bakery counter together under one roof.
Today
We develop and manufacture CBD and plant-based wellness products in Tokyo, drawing on more than a decade in the Japanese market.
